Lifting is the riskiest moment in precast construction. A panel that’s cast perfectly can still crack, slip, or cause injury if it’s lifted the wrong way. Here’s a simple look at how a safe lift actually works.
Before the concrete is even poured, a lifting anchor is placed inside the mould at the correct position. This anchor is what the crane will eventually connect to — so getting its placement and rating right matters from the very start.
A recess former sits around the anchor during casting, keeping the area clear so the anchor can be accessed later. It also leaves behind a clean, flush pocket in the finished panel — no rough patch-up needed.
The panel cures fully before any lifting takes place. Lifting too early — before the concrete reaches sufficient strength — is one of the most common causes of cracking.
Once cured, a lifting clutch is attached to the anchor. A good clutch offers a quick, secure connection and can rotate safely under load — reducing manual handling and speeding up repetitive lifts.
The crane lifts the panel through the anchor and into the surrounding reinforcement — spreading the load safely through the concrete rather than concentrating stress at one point.
After lifting and installation, the recess pocket is filled and finished, leaving no visible trace of the anchor.
Skip a step, or use the wrong-rated anchor for the panel’s weight, and you’re not looking at a minor defect — you’re looking at a potential safety incident. Matching the anchor, clutch, and recess former to the actual panel spec is what keeps a lift smooth and safe every time.
